Walleye and Perch
Ice fisherman have been doing well, however the bite has slowed down around the islands. Catawba state park and South Bass Island remain the 2 areas anglers are accessing the ice. I have heard anywhere between 6-12 inches of ice out of Catawba state park. Crane creek has been very productive this past week. Fast limits and big fish. If you don’t like the crowds around the islands give crane creek a try, you will not be disappointed. Perch have been hitting very well off south bass island with many limits being reported. Lake Erie ice guides are running back and forth to south bass very regularly and the traffic is high right now in that area. Swedish pimples, kastmasters, and bare hooks tipped with minnows have been taking both perch and walleye both east and west. There was also a report of a lake trout being caught in sandusky bay, what a cool catch! Presque isle bay remains a good perch spot, 20 FOW is the ticket.
We did receive some rain yesterday and we have reports of slush and water all over the lake and marinas. If you are taking machines or walking out this will slow you down a bit. There have been reports of one SUV and multiple quads going through the ice around the islands this past week. Having this happen can be as simple as avoiding the deep snow or stay on a trail. There is a Christmas tree trail in place and people have been using it regularly. Just be careful and use your own judgement.
If you are wanting to ice fish Lake Erie please use a guide your first time to see how everything is done up there. You can make one mistake and it’s all over.
Since the warmup yesterday steelhead fisherman have been reporting open water from vermilion to presque isle bay. The eastern tribs in PA are still locked up, but the western ones had open water this morning. Good catches have been reported between last night and this morning. It’s only going to get better as spring arrives.
